Belly dance is the most amazing dance form known to womankind.
Belly dance doesn’t care how old, young, thin, fat, uncoordinated, or rhythm-impaired a woman is. Belly dance doesn’t care if she has never danced a day in her life. Belly dance will embrace the dancer show her how to roll, sway, bump, undulate, shimmy and flutter her body in elegant and artistic ways.
The dancer learns slow, earthy moves that center and ground her, connecting and rooting her to her inner self. She also learns quick, staccato moves which fill her with energy and joy, rejuvenating and invigorating her spirit.
Each move is capable of evoking a wide range of emotions, allowing her to express what is in her heart, from deep passion to lighthearted fun. Whatever the dancer wants to express, there’s a belly dance move for it.
This dance has the ability to transform a shy, awkward-in-her-own-body girl into a confident, ready-to-take-on-the-world woman. With each move and dance learned, the dancer becomes less hesitant and unsure of what she is doing and becomes more courageous and self-assured.
In ancient times, this dance was only danced and performed for women by women. Sharing this dance creates a strong community and connection with the women who dance together. In this sisterhood, women encourage one another, share their knowledge, create, explore, learn and watch each other grow in the dance.
Laughter, smiles and fun abound in belly dancing. The dancers are happy, laughing as the teacher tells stories of her learning years, smiling to herself when she is finally able to perform a move she has been practicing for months, and having fun as she enjoys every minute of class.
So I ask you, dear reader, are you one of the fortunate ones who already knows the joys of belly dance or are you one of the newbies ready to step into a whole new world and discover all that this ancient art form has to offer?
